General Timeline for Pre-Professional Health Science Majors
Freshman
- Get to know your pre-professional advisors and other professors.
- Research the professional schools that you might wish to attend; note their requirements for admission.
- Read some general books on strategies for successful admission.
- Surf the World Wide Web and see what’s available on-line. You can find a lot of good information on the web.
- Volunteer/community service
- Join Clubs
- Pre-Scripts, 2nd & 4th Wed/Month @ 5:00 in DSB 106 (Pre-Med and Pre-Pharmacy)
- Student National Medical Association (Pre-Med)
- Delta Delta Sigma (Pre-Dental and Pre-Dental Hygiene)
- Women in Science and Engineering
- Get experience in your pre-professional field.
- STUDY HARD and maintain a good GPA in all courses, especially science courses.
Sophomore
- Make sure basic science courses needed for the professional tests are completed.
- Start studying for the MCAT/PCAT/DAT; learn about the preview courses available.
- Familiarize yourself with the application procedure, but don’t apply yet.
- Volunteer/community service
- Join clubs Get experience in your pre-professional field.
- STUDY HARD and maintain a good GPA in all courses, especially science courses.
Summer
- plan on pursuing an internship, research, volunteer, etc.
Junior
Fall
- Study for the MCAT/PCAT/DAT/OAT/GRE
- Start on your personal statement.
Spring
- Take the MCAT/PCAT/DAT/OAT/GRE. (It is not recommended to delay until August.)
- Work on your personal statement. Give it to your advisors and other professors to look at.
- Sign up for and have your interviews with the pre-professional advisory committee in KUC 316.
Summer
- Pre-Meds- File applications as soon as possible but do not send the application in before June 1st.
- Pre-Pharmacy – File the PHARMCAS and non-PHARMCAS applications as soon as possible but do not send the application in before June 1st.
Late Summer and Fall
- complete secondary application
Senior
- Have your interviews with pre-professional advisory committee (if not completed in Junior year).
- Prepare for and go to any interviews that you are offered. Research the schools in advance and look at interview web sites. This is a great web site to prepare for interviews for professional schools: www.studentdoctor.net
