Minors that Complement a Chemistry Major

Four modifications are common:

  1. The Biological Chemist (19 semester hours in Biology)
    Biol 1110, 1120 (8), Biol 2120, 2230 (8), Biol 3010 or 3020 (4).
    Total=20 hrs (8 of which are required for either chemistry major)
  2. The Physical Chemist (19 semester hours in Physics)
    Phys 2010, 2020, 2011, 2021 (8), Phys 3150, 3160 (6) or 3400 (3), 3100, 3110 (6).
    Total=20 hrs (11 of which are required for an ACS approved major)
  3. The Theoretical Chemist (19 semester hours in Math)
    Math 1910 (4), Math 1920, 3110 (8), Math 2010 (3), 3120, 3260 (6) – Math 1730 can be substituted for one of the upper division courses.
    Total=21 hrs (12 of which are required for an ACS approved major)
  4. The Computational Chemist (17 semester hours in Computer Science)
    Math 1910 (4), CSCI 1170, CSCI 2170, CSCI 3032, and CSCI 3080 (13)
    Total = 17 hrs (7 of which are required for an ACS approved major)

The Chemistry Minor

To qualify for a minor in chemistry, one must take a minimum of 19 semester hours of chemistry. These hours consist of CHEM 1110/1120 (8) and three more courses. At least 4 upper-division hours must be taken at MTSU.

Four modifications are common:

  1. The Molecular Biologist
    Chem 1110/1120 (8), Chem 3010/3020 (8), and Chem 3530 or 4500 (4).
    Total=20 hrs
  2. The Environmental Biologist
    Chem 1110/1120 (8), Chem 2230 (5), 2030 (or 3010 (4) and 3020 (4)), and Chem 3530 (4).
    Total=21 hrs
  3. The Chemical Physicist
    Chem 1110/1120 (8), Chem 2230 (5), Chem 4350/4360 (8)
    Total=21 hrs
  4. The Job-Seeking Minimalist
    Chem 1110/1120 (8), Chem 2030 (4), Chem 3530 (4), Chem 4400 (3)
    Total=19 hrs
